Barbuda
The aftermath of Hurricane Irma in September 2017, the fifth strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic with a maximal wind 180mph, left Barbuda’s built environment, fauna and flora shattered. The 62-square mile island has started its reconstruction, and its prior 1600 evacuated inhabitants and wildlife are increasingly getting back on their island under a new era of land reform. This proposal aims at reconstructing the social-economic structure of Barbuda following the destruction by Hurricane Irma. The new museum forms part of a larger development strategy and is intended to tell the complex and rich story of Barbuda and the Caraibes. While cultural infrastructures often sit in the final stage of development policies, this project demonstrates that Cultural representation can be a catalyst for development and a necessary building step to restore a nation when nothing else is left.
